About the AGM
Each year the Society sponsors a Scientific Conference. This conference usually lasts for 3 or 4 days and is held in a capital city or regional centre. Many of these conferences are held independently, but they have also been held jointly with other groups, such as the Society of Australian Systematic Biologists and the Invertebrate Biodiversity and Conservation group. Two joint meetings have been held with the New Zealand Entomological Society in 1996 and 2006. The Society has hosted the International Congress of Entomology in 1972 and 2004.
Scientific Meetings of the Society are convivial and collegial. Scientific presentations are of three kinds as follows, keynote addresses, usually of 30–50 mins duration, standard 12+3 minute oral presentations, and poster presentations.
The Society sponsors a number of prizes awarded at the Conference, in particular the Phil Carne Prize for the best student presentation, and a number of illustration and photography awards.
The conference usually begins with an informal mixer at the conference venue, and the second last night of the conference is usually reserved for a Conference Dinner.
Late on the afternoon of the second day of the conference is usually reserved for the Annual General Meeting of the Society. All full and student members of the Society are invited to attend the AGM. The President Chairs the AGM, and the members of the Society Executive speak to tabled written documents that summarise the activities and financial position of the Society over the past 12 months. This is a chance for members of the Society to proved feedback to the Executive about Society business, and suggest future activities.
